How to Make a Crop Circle

Crop circles in the UK.
Crop circles (a generic term for the phenomenon of flattened plants) form in many areas of the world, with visual effects ranging from irregular shapes to amazing geometric patterns. The source of their formation is surrounded by controversy (see How to Explain Crop Circles), but there are some crop circles out there that have definitely been made by people. If you've ever wanted to explore making crop circles as a skill and an art form, here's how!

Steps

  1. Choose a legal location for your crop circle. Obtain permission from the land owner before you start planning. Ideal choices are sloped fields that rise from public vantage points (a road for instance), or even an amphitheatre-like valley.
  2. Touching circles form a basic design.
Plan your crop circle using a large scale map, to ensure access for both you and your audience.

Plot your straight-line or circular design. Mark on the map the directions you will be flattening, to avoid visible signs of passage (inexperienced circle makers can spoil a design by leaving stripes like a lawnmower would).

Initial access is normally through existing farm tracks and trails, so note the position of them before you start.
  3. True non-spherical curves are much harder to achieve, and rarely if ever witnessed.
Create your design on computer, and make amendments until you have the design you can be proud of. Use inspiration from state-of-the-art designs as seen on the internet (see External Links).

Practising shape-making in the field will only result in people seeing your mistakes.

Start simple: consider making your first crop circle from an arrangement of spheres in a geometric formation. More advanced curved lines can be created by overlapping partial circlular arcs.
  4. Equip each member with the equipment listed under Thing's You'll Need.
  5. Once in the field, use measurements to place markers exactly. Your friends can help you place markers, make line-of-sight calculations, and lay the rope to mark areas for flattening.
  6. Using constuction lines to make more complex shapes.
Make construction lines by laying rope outlines to shapes. Then flatten circles at the intersection points. To make the shown example formation, create a rope outline of a equilateral triangle, and create flattened circles at the triangle corners. Avoid flattening over the rope, to create an implied triangle.
  7. There are two methods commonly used to flatten:

    • Plank Flattening - use a roped plank (see Thing's You'll Need) to flatten by holding the rope or looping it over your shoulders. Press forwards and down by keeping one foot on the plank. Advance using a shuffling gait.
    • Using a roller - some circlemakers prefer using a light roller (available from garden centres) to speed up flattening.
  8. Keep on flattening until you have completed your design and have a really nice, well-made complex formation.
  9. Wait for the media to spot the new formation. This may take several days, or you can speed the process by making an anonymous call. A good design will provide local newspapers with many column-inches of speculation.

Tips

  • For best results you should probably spend more time planning the crop circle than actually making it. By carefully planning the design, working out what equipment is needed, and discarding ideas that will be difficult or impossible to achieve, you can reduce the scope for embarrassing errors.
  • Flatten during a dry period, to avoid churning up mud.
  • Try to use the cover of night. Remember that ideally you should be finished by dawn, when you can take a picture of the pristine design before swarms of "croppies" come and trample all over it.
  • To leave an 'authentic' crop circle of cosmic orgins:

    • Bend some stalks around by exposing them to a blue light source for a few hours. Applying small amounts of natural gum or plaster will lock their new shape. Sadly this approach may not satisfy a detailed or scientific inspection.
    • Create swirled nests in the flattened areas by your clever weaving of stalks.
    • Also, melt some iron filings into droplets on site and sprinkle them around the flattened area to leave 'meteorite particles' and magnetised stalks.

Warnings

  • Crop circle art is like graffiti for 'cerealogists', often undertaken without permission. Be careful, as unsurprisingly most farmers do NOT want damage to their property. Crop circles damage a portion of the crop, and although farmers can charge spectators to see the finished result, it's better to operate within the law.
  • The amount of crop flattened need not be excessive to make a strong impression of shape and form. In fact, you should not plan to flatten a larger area destructively, and it had better be beautiful or you can expect criticism and opposition.

Things You'll Need

  • A light plank (4-6 feet in length) with a rope (10-12 feet) knotted through holes in each end. Alternatively, you may prefer to buy a light garden roller from a garden centre.
  • A big ball of rope or nylon string (pre-stretched)
  • Marking pole
  • Protractor for measuring angles
  • Measuring tape (100 ft)
  • Night-vision goggles (optional)
  • Laser-pointer to assist placing markers (optional)

'Da Vinci Code' really does kill Jesus faith!

It seems that tolerant Christians who dismissed "The Da Vinci Code" as just a fictional book forgot that most people think the same thing about the Holy Bible.

Worse, the War of the Books is not looking good for Jesus and his followers.

An outrageous new study of British readers proves that 60% of people who read Dan Brown's silly thriller believe the biblical character Jesus had unprotected sexual intercourse with the character Mary Magdalene and that she repeatedly got pregnant by the self-proclaimed "son of god" and had his babies.

Amusingly, 30% of people who hadn't read the book believed the same thing.

Results of the survey, funded by a U.K. Catholic group, were released today in London.

While the Bible says nothing one way or the other about who Jesus had sexual intercourse with, or how many children he did or didn't have, for some reason it is an important "tradition" to Catholics and Christians that Jesus not only refused to have sexual intercourse with either men or women, but that he even refused the socially-acceptable charade of having a "beard" spouse.

Apparently, the faith of Catholics and Christians everywhere is in great trouble if it turns out that the character Jesus made use of his reproductive organ.

Hilariously, 17% of those who read "The Da Vinci Code" believe the nutty Catholic cult group Opus Dei has been caught murdering people. (Only 4% of those who didn't read the book maintain that Opus Dei members are crazed killers.)

Catholic leaders in Britain have gone totally hysterical over the new survey, with various officials demanding that "health warnings" be affixed to copies of the book or, presumably, tickets for the upcoming film adaptation of the novel.

Tre historier jeg er en smule skeptisk til

1.

Japan is proud home of Christ's tomb
From Leo Lewis in Shingo Village
IN A paddy-lined valley in the far north of Japan is a municipal signpost inscribed: “Tomb of Christ: next left.”

Follow the winding path up into the forest and there, sure enough, is a simple mound with a large wooden cross labelled as the grave of Jesus. Nearby is a tomb commemorating Isukiri, Christ’s brother, adorned with a plastic poinsettia Christmas wreath.

For two millennia the farming village of Shingo claims to have protected a tradition that Jesus spent most of his life in Japan. The village is the home of Sajiro Sawaguchi, a man in his eighties who claims to be a direct descendant of Jesus and whose family has always owned the land in which it is said that Christ is buried.

2.

Blond Jesus saves!

A little boy in the Philippines has come back from the dead after 17 hours, thanks to a blond and bearded Jesus who saved him.

In early June, ten-year-old Dante "Jun-Jun" Cardel Jr. started inexplicably vomiting blood. By late June, doctors had diagnosed a fatal and inoperable brain tumor.

His parents were devastated.

On June 21, Jun-Jun succumbed following his brief but valiant battle with cancer. Doctors removed his life-support system and pronounced him dead. His weeping parents brought the body home, cradling him on their laps as they made the long journey from the Philippine General Hospital in Manila to their home in Puro.

There they were greeted by a crowd of neighbors who had set up tents, tables, and chairs for Jun-Jun's wake. To their collective surprise, Jun-Jun sat bolt upright around 8 a.m. and asked for food.

He later told The Manila Times about his brief visit to the afterlife.

"I was in my father's arms when I saw Jesus Christ with a beard and long blond hair. He told me to wake up. There were two birds beside him, one black and the other white, flying around jackfruit trees. Jesus looked at me and touched my eyes. When I woke up I looked up at the sky, but I didn't see him again," he said.

According to another source, the boy saw a church with beautiful singing angels and the aforementioned golden-haired Jesus.

If nothing else, this amazing miracle at least clears up the age-old question about the color and length of the hair of the Christian savior.

UFO buzzed Apollo 11!

Astronaut hero Buzz Aldrin says a mysterious flying object shadowed the first manned mission to the Moon in 1969, according to a shocking new documentary.

"There was something out there, close enough to be observed," says Aldrin in "Apollo 11: The Untold Story," which will be broadcast tonight by Britain's Channel Five.

"Now, obviously the three of us weren't going to blurt out, 'Hey, Houston, we've got something moving alongside of us and we don't know what it is,' you know? We weren't about to do that, because we knew that that those transmissions would be heard by all sorts of people and somebody might have demanded we turn back because of aliens or whatever the reason is."

Who Wrote the Bible?

Who Wrote the Bible? Is the Bible the Word of God? Why is the Bible full of Contradictions?

This documentary explores questions at the heart of the great Christian faith in a fair open-minded fashion. It is NOT meant to be inflamatory but informative. The truth one will see is the Bible is NOT what it is thought to be. So what is the Bible? Find out!

Now since we can see Christianity is not what we thought it was, we can try and learn about Islam, a religion that many equate with terrorism. Search and learn about Islam as it is thought even by the most educated people on Earth to be the ultimate way to truth and happiness, in the truest sense of the word.

Metal Søndag 9. juli

Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Black Dragon, 1986

The Science Of Fiction

I enjoy science fiction. That unpopular stance is likely to anger our readers and spark heated debate for months to come, but there you have it. I especially love the technology seen in sci-fi movies, those fantastic and often outlandish inventions that solve humanity's problems in creative ways. They tend to make you feel hopeful about the future, and you should. After all, life keeps getting better and better every year in the real world.

A thousand years ago if you were lucky enough to live past the age of thirty you'd have been bored and generally miserable. Nowadays, you can't even turn on the computer or television that serve as your closest friends without seeing offers for pills that promise to block out your feelings of loneliness and make you think you're happy. Take that, cavemen! I can't even imagine how awesome things will be in another thousand years, but I bet the remote controls will have at least two more buttons. I'd suggest one called "Mute?" for people who think they want to mute the television but aren't really sure.

Lay's Inferno

CANTO I

In the autumn of his mortal journey
Stood Kenneth Lay upon the balcony
and o'er Aspen looked he to pines
speckling beauteous peaks touched azure skies.
Judgment from white splendor sent
And dark times at the threshold brought
For Kenneth Lay was guilty found by peers
The questions left were spelled out years.
Kenneth Lay took in the air once more
Brace his thoughts and steel his will
To gaze upon the capsule in his grasp
No sting but deadly as the asp.
The gin was neat the tonic dry
The in-deck spa was hot as womb
The plasma screen blurted Jeopardy
And the pill was gone.
Oh, heart, frail and feeble!
Grasped in icy hand and crushed
This dreadful fist envelopes him
And Kenneth Lay is gone.

How to Study Weird Things

As a science teacher in an interdisciplinary undergraduate program, I often encounter students who want to study topics that many of my colleagues would find nonacademic, and certainly unscientific, such as astrology, Reiki, channeling, Tarot, homeopathy, and ESP. What can an instructor, working within the western scientific tradition, do with such requests? One approach is to clearly explain to the student that these topics "aren't science," and they are not going to learn anything from researching them. I think that this gets a student nowhere, and it is just such an attitude that makes many afraid to pursue unconventional interests. This position also reinforces the students' mistrust of science, professors, and academia, an attitude that they will find no shortage of in the books written on the unconventional subjects of their choice.

A Field Guide to Critical Thinking

There are many reasons for the popularity of paranormal beliefs in the United States today, including:

1. the irresponsibility of the mass media, who exploit the public taste for nonsense,
2. the irrationality of the American world-view, which supports such unsupportable claims as life after death and the efficacy of the polygraph, and
3. the ineffectiveness of public education, which generally fails to teach students the essential skills of critical thinking.

As a college professor, I am especially concerned with this third problem. Most of the freshman and sophomore students in my classes simply do not know how to draw reasonable conclusions from the evidence. At most, they've been taught in high school what to think; few of them know how to think.

Metal Søndag 2. juli

Kyuss - Blues for the Red Sun
Dali Records, 1992
