Genocide Museum to be built in Guba

Preliminary funds have been allocated to build the Genocide Museum in the northern Azerbaijani region of Guba 160 kilometers outside Baku.

"Arrangements are underway to construct the museum to remember the genocide committed by Armenians against the local population in Guba in 1918," MP Yevda Abramov told Trend News today.

A mass grave was discovered while constructing a stadium in Guba in mid-April 2007. Soon after, an expedition group was formed, and an archeological excavation was conducted.

Historians and archeologists determined that the mass grave was formed during a genocide committed by Armenians in Guba in 1918.

Excavations have uncovered the bones of around 400 people, including over 50 children and 100 women.

Abramov said the Guba Regionsl Administration submitted a preliminary draft bill to build the museum at the site of the mass grave.

"One million manat has been allocated to implement the project's first phase ," the MP said.

During his visit to Guba this September, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev instructed the relevant authorities to speed up the museum's construction.

"The president gave priority to building the museum. I think that a museum should be built and we must teach the world about the genocide committed by Armenians here," Abramov said.

He added that some homes near the mass grave will be removed using state funds.
