I am the Product of a McDojo

I went into a training program in good faith. I didn't know much about karate, or even that there were different types of martial arts, but I did know that I wanted to learn how to defend myself.

To someone like me, whose only exposure was through TV and movies, when a school opens and you go to see the instructor, and he looks like what he does is a lot like the things you see on TV, you tend to believe that they really do know what they are doing. When the price seems reasonable and he says "you look like you're in pretty good shape, good enough I can promise you'll be a black belt in 2 years" you get excited, and you sign on the dotted line. When he offers you a 10% discount for paying cash up front, you jump at it. And then you start your classes, knowing that in just 2 years you'll be a black belt and you'll be able to defend yourself.

He was right. In 2 years I did get my black belt. I went through the test with a dozen other people, and we all paid $500 to test, and amazingly enough we all passed. We were downright proud of ourselves and each other for getting through 2 years of sweat with each other, helping each other to learn along the way.

My Experience In a Local McDojo

I have decided to write about my experiences in a sub-par Martial Arts studio named American Hapkido Karate. Before going off into detail, I will apologize for any possible grammatical mistakes that I may do in this article. If I do mess up and a certain sentence becomes unreadable because of it, just ask me what I meant and I will explain it to you.

My journey to this martial arts studio is probably the same story as everyone else who gets tricked into joining a McDojo. I was looking for a martial art that would teach me self-defense so I can be able to walk on t3h str33t. I started searching on the internet and I found a martial art named Hapkido. By what I read and what everyone was telling me, Hapkido would be the ultimate martial art to learn. I want to say at this point before I go into the rest of article that this is NOT an attack on Hapkido. I was shown video clips that people sent me of an attacker grabbing someone by the chest just to being thrown to the ground and be incapacitated. I saw a plethora of other videos that followed suit in that and I was more than impressed. I was ready to learn Hapkido. Now, to find a place that teaches it.....

Fang Shen Do: Tales From the Inner Circle

Hello all,

Firstly, I'd like to thank everyone who has posted about their past experiences with Fang Shen Do (aka Patenaude's Wing Chun Do) – they were a great read, and I can corroborate much of the allegations made against the “art” and it's founder. This forum is without question the best forum on exposing what Fang Shen Do is really all about... It should have come out years before, but nevertheless, the truth is finally starting to be told.

I would like to add my two cents to it – the following is some of my own darker personal experiences with the style and it's founder, Jacques Patenaude. I will not accuse the man of anything outright, but I will recount some of the more controversial experiences I had with the man and “his cult” over the years... I will let the reader draw his or her own conclusions.

I also hope that with me coming forward and telling my anecdotes, others who have had similar experiences with the man will also come forward with their own stories... I feel only the surface of what Fang Shen Do is all about has been scratched, and there's a lot more that needs telling.

Bullshido: No BS Martial Arts
